Starting with the 1986-87 season, the WCHA started honoring a league player or players with the Student-Athlete of the Year award.  The award is based on a combination of academics, sprtsmanship and athletic ability.  Each member school nominates one player from their team.

The name of this award was changed starting with the 2006-07 season to the WCHA Outstanding Student of the Year.  

So far 3 Gophers have been honored with this award.
