Since 1951, the American Hockey Coaches Association has awarded the Spencer Penrose Award to the best Division I college hockey coach. Spencer Penrose was the founder of the Broadmoor Hotel Complex in Colorado Springs, CO. The Broadmoor World Arena was the site of the first 10 NCAA ice hockey championship tournaments. Two Gopher coaches have been honored as the Division I Coach of the Year. |
